====RECAP AND PREVIEW====
This past Friday night, Shades Valley welcomed fellow region foe the Pinson Valley Indians to Frank Nix Memorial Complex for homecoming. Pinson Valley came into the game with a 1-5 region record and a 1-7 overall record, while Shades Valley had a 3-3 region record and was 5-3 overall. Shades Valley came into the game after a dramatic come from behind win over the Oxford Yellow Jackets while Pinson Valley won their first game of the season over Pell City, 22-4. Shades Valley methodically wore down the Indians en route to a happy homecoming and the first shutout win in five years by defeating Pinson Valley 34-0. The win over Pinson Valley gave Shades Valley their sixth victory on the year, marking the most wins by any Mountie team since 2000 and guarantees a winning season for the first time since that same year. The Region 7 breakdown after the ninth week looks like this. First place was decided in Gadsden Friday as Gadsden City defeated Clay-Chalkville to take the region championship. Clay-Chalkville then fell into a three-way tie for second place in the region with Oxford and Hewitt-Trussville, who also won on Friday. Hewitt-Trussville then got the nod for second by virtue of their previous defeat of first place Gadsden City. Oxford then got third because of their victory over Clay-Chalkville, who then took fourth. The wins by Oxford and Hewitt-Trussville Friday night eliminated Shades Valley from playoff contention. Shades Valley, however, finished in fifth place in the region with a 4-3 record, their first winning region record since 2000. Several futile streaks have also been broken by the Mounties this year. They got their first winning record since 2000, their first shutout since 2004, and they snapped a six game series winning streak by Oxford by defeating them for the first time ever. Since Coach Curtis Coleman came to Shades Valley, his Mountie teams have increased by two the number of wins they have had each year, starting with his first year, the Mounties had 0 in 2006, 2 in 2007, 4 in 2008 and 6 in 2009.

The Mounties next game is the final game of the 2009 season. It is the 37th all-time matchup with the Vestavia Hills Rebels. Vestavia Hills leads the series between the teams 26-9-1. Shades Valley and Vestavia Hills first met in 1973 with the game ending in a 7-7 tie. The two teams did not meet in 1974, but resumed the series in 1975 and have played every year since. This will be the 35th consecutive year Shades Valley has met Vestavia Hills in football, with Vestavia taking 26 of those previous 35 meetings. In the process, Vestavia Hills has ran off a couple of winning streaks against Shades Valley, winning eight in a row from 1978-85, and the current nine game streak from 2000 to the present. Regardless of the outcome, most of the contests are fairly close and rarely are any games in the series a blowout. In 1998, there were two meetings that season. The two teams met in the season opening game, with Vestavia taking a 20-11 victory. Both teams then ran off twelve straight wins, only to meet again in the semifinals of the state playoffs. Vestavia came in ranked # 1 in the state and the Mounties were # 7, and Vestavia Hills took a thrilling 42-35 overtime victory over the Mounties, which many said at the time was the game that actually decided the state championship. The next year, the Mounties got a measure of revenge by routing the defending state champions 31-0 on their own home field to open the 1999 season. That win would turn out to be the last victory Shades Valley would enjoy over the Rebels, with the Rebels having won the last nine straight in the series coming into the game this week. Vestavia Hills comes into the game after winning their eighth game of the season 45-21 over the Thompson Warriors. Vestavia Hills averages 33.5 points per game while giving up an average of 13.1. Shades Valley comes in averaging 23.8 points while giving up an average of 16.6.

Coach Curtis Coleman brings in his Mounties at 4-3 in Region 7 and 6-3 overall. This is Coach Coleman's fourth year at Shades Valley. He is 12-27 in those four years after previously coaching at Ensley and Huffman. His overall career record is 128-110 in 22 years as a head coach. The Vestavia Hills Rebels are the champions of Region 6, and are 7-1 in the region and 8-1 overall. Their head coach is Buddy Anderson, who is in his 32nd year at the school and has a career record of 268-111-1, all at Vestavia. He is now seventh on the all time list of winningest coaches in the state, passing former Shades Valley coach Robert Higginbotham on the list this past week with his Rebels win over Thompson.

Shades Valley's game against the Vestavia Hills Rebels will be played on Friday, October 30 at 7 pm at Thompson Reynolds Stadium/Buddy Anderson Field on the campus of Vestavia Hills High School in Vestavia Hills. This is the Mounties last football game for the 2009 season.
