SV Theatre presents "Ragtime"

The historic Virginia Samford Theatre & Metropolitan Arts Center are proud to continue their successful educational program, STARS (Students Take a Role at the Samford), designed to encourage and train young performers in acting, dance and voice. Students are given the opportunity to experience the thrill of developing their skills in all areas of live theatre with some of the finest arts educators in the Southeast.  Led by award-winning educator Roy Hudson (Shades Valley's theatre director, and Alabama 's 2008-09 Teacher of the Year), the STARS arts education program fosters and showcases the talents of Birmingham 's best young performers.

Following the enormous success of "Les Miserables" and "Jekyll and Hyde," Shades Valley Theatre Academy and VST STARS join forces again with RAGTIME, a tapestry of New York-area life in the first decades of the 20th century.  People from radically different walks of life - an African-American family, a Jewish immigrant family, and a wealthy suburban WASP family - see their lives intersect in the aftermath of a crime, with unexpectedly emotional results.  RAGTIME intertwines three distinct stories that poignantly illustrate history’s timeless contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair, and love and hate.

RAGTIME features an all-star student cast from schools throughout the Birmingham area, including Nicholas Burroughs, Caroline Page, Dallas Taylor, Michael Hudson, Elliott Cleverdon, Reid Watson, Doug Henry and Kyra Wharton.  Directed by Roy Hudson, with musical direction by Michael King, choreography by Julia Simpson, and costume design by Janice Sanders.
